Genetista británico. Hijo de John Scott Haldane, comenzó su formación científica como ayudante de su padre a la edad de ocho años y posteriormente obtuvo un M.A. en Oxford. Haldane, R. A. Fisher y Sewall Wright, mediante argumentos matemáticos independientes basados en análisis de las tasas de
mutación, tamaño de las poblaciones, patrones de reproducción y otros factores, relacionaron la teoría evolucionista de
Charles Darwin y los conceptos sobre la herencia de
Gregor Mendel. Haldane también contribuyó a la teoría de la acción enzimática y a estudios en fisiología humana.
